Boomers Unused Resorce?
57AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM
It is no surprize that the challenge presented to the USA by the aging population represented by the Baby Boomers would present very chalenging problems to the entire population of the United States.
Those in politics have lamented this situation for over four decades but lamentations have not resulted in needed solutions. The current magnitude of this problem does not lend itself to typical political solutions. My purpose in writing this hub is to both make some proposals and stimulate other proposals for consideration for the common good of all American citizens..
Scope of The Problem
The scope of the problem presented by the looming retirement of the baby boomers have been well documented by many others. With a current National Debt of the USA at $12 trillion, and current unfunded liabilities represented by past promises of Social Security and Medicare presently amounting to $60 trillion the scope of this problem is self evident. This total figure of $72 trillion dollars amounts to $230,000 per citizen and growing rapidly.
For historical perspective until 1933 the largest budget of the Federal Government had been $5 billion during WW I. Our current econimic situation is clearly unsustainable and failure to find a workable solution will result in economic catastrophe. The transfer of wealth from the young to the old is totally unjustified and detrimental to THIS GREAT UNION. It is possible if unsolved the Union shall perish into the dust bin of history. I warned my daughters of this emminate disaster over twenty years ago. Enough with the lamentations!!!
Bring Light Do Not Curse The Darkness
I will now attemp to bring light into a proposed solution to this problem. The Boomers do not have to be a liability. We are in fact a great asset. We have knowledge. We have experience. We have capability. Most importantly I believe we are motivated to be part of the solution and not be part of the problem. My belief is overwhelming supported in this very forum. Many hubbers are in my age group and I can see the qualities which I espoused above.
I believe our assets must be utilized to solve the problem. We can contribute by both ideas and actions in many ways. These contributions can be utilized by government, private and academic entities. For myself I am currently volunteering to use my knowledge in any productive manner to add value to the economic well being of the USA . If I can can contribute value rather than just consume resources then the economic impact of the Boomers use of assets will be offset (by some amount) by the contributions of value of ideas and actions.
This idea has been in practice for years by retired corporate executives (SCORE) there is no reason why it's larger introduction to retired boomers should not work productively.
I Need Your Help
I have presented a proposal in this hub. If you agree please show your support in both words (comments) and deeds (willingness to volunteer) and further ideas towards implimentation. I intend to forward this idea to the Dean of The WVU School of Engineering (my alma mater). Let's get all thinkers involved in the solution and send ideas to those who may make ideas into reality.
I do not want my generation to go down in history as the worst generation in the History of the USA, and I beleive this is a means to our redemption. Thank you and God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.
UPDATE
Today (9/2/2009) I was contacted by SCORE in Wheeling, WV concerning my proposal. SCORE is interested in implimenting the proposal. We will be talking by telephone on Friday (9/4/2009) about further details and probably meeting on Monday (9/7/2009). I am hopeful that our talks will be fruitful. I will keep you all informed.

Tom,
It is easy to see a great example of our generation. I'm glad you published your first HUB, it was worth all of us reading it.
I am with you, Tom. I have volunteered for many organizations and charities. Our generation has plenty to offer and we should give back all we can to the nation that has granted us the opportunities we have had to live lives filled with wonder and comfort.
Your idea here is simple, efficient, and brilliant. I must applaud you.
We boomers have so much experience and expertise to pool and share. I am with you all of the way. Whatever I can do, I will.
I would only change one small portion of your hub here, and it just my personal preference only.
If there is a God in heaven,I would hope that he would have the temerity to bless the WHOLE WORLD and not just America. It has been said that God created all mankind equally, so I beleive that all mankind and not just America should share in any potenital blessings. Also, lets face it if the rest of the world goes under, America will crumble and fall into the abyss as well.
So for me, "Please God, bless the whole world! And do it soon if you can because a lot of people out there are suffering terribly."
I think you are right that the boomers are an unused resource. However, I feel that it is ludicrous to blame an entire generation of people for the perceived sins of anyone (Dick Cheney/George Bush). The boomers are hard working people who contributed to Medicare, and other programs they are about to access for their entire lives. The fault lies in government officials who have mishandled Social Security, Medicare, and MediCaid for generations. I am a conservative but I did not agree with George Bush's War in Iraq. I never particularly liked Bush. However, I really get sick of people vilifying him as if he is the devil or something worse. George Bush did what he thought was right for this country. Period. Just because some people disagreed with his policies does not make the man a criminal. As for Dick Cheney, he served this country under four administrations and that makes him an American patriot in my book. Our country did not suffer even one terrorist attack after 9/11 and that is a great achievement. Right now we are in a war that is escalating in Afghanistan. We have 62,000 soldiers in that country right now and expect to send another 20,000 by the end of the year, yet I do not hear anyone vilifying President Obama for his handling of this war. If the president is so concerned about stopping waste in government he should revisit his plan to close GITMO merely because the left members of his party do not like the Iraq war and the stigma that a few dishonorable soldiers brought on the military. GITMO is a state of the art facility and cost a fortune to build. Now we are going to empty it and let it go to ruin. Ridiculous!
Tom, you wrote an excellent hub about utilizing this untapped resource. (Boomers) Sorry about the rant but I am sick of watching this country's debt rise every day! The baby boomers are well educated, and are the most consistent block of voters in the country. They (we) will refuse to be marginalized. There will be consequences for insulting and penalizing 20% of the population.
Dear Tom,
You are a shining and proud example of a fabulous generation. Boomers have so much to offer, particularly to the generation coming up who won't remember what it was like to live in a free society.
Dear Tom,
I know that and I am proud to call you my friend.

Interesting ideas, Tom! Certainly there have been great people in our generations and scoundrels like George Bush 2. But I don't think that the baby boomers were such a bad generation as a whole.
I am sure that many boomers will continue to work and contribute to society just because the value of their investments has been destroyed by the bankster cartel.
I see many boomers holding onto their jobs, and some who are able can volunteer their knowledge.
As far as being the worst generation, certainly the one containing Richard Cheney would qualify, just because he was in it! So boomers should not beat up on themselves too much.
