LAMENTATIONS OF A FOOTBALL FAN
51INTRODUCTION
Fellow Hubbers, and other readers if you’ve read any of my hubs you’re aware I am an avid sports fan. I love my Mountaineers in all sports and I am a great fan of Pittsburgh professional sports. I do, however have my limits to my fandom and the time has come where I have reevaluated my loyalty to the Pittsburgh Steelers!!!!!!!!!!!!
MOUNTAINEER COMEBACK
On Friday night of September 10, 20010 my Mountaineers were down to archrival and in state rival Marshall by a score of 21-6 with 6:30 to go in the fourth quarter of the game. I was corresponding with my friend Susie via email and I told her it was over at that time. She told me the Mountaineers would come back and I replied, ”Possible, but doubtful.”
Then in the miracle of Huntington the Mountaineers mounted the impossible comeback and pulled victory from the jaws of defeat by a 24-21 margin in overtime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY PROBLEM WITH THE STEELERS
I have been a fan of all professional sports in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for as long as I can remember. I went and saw Pirate and Steeler games in old Forbes Field when each team was a joke. I went to Mellon Arena to watch the Penguins long before Mario Lemieux made the team a contender. My loyalty to Pittsburgh professional sports has been a lifelong passion!!!!!!!!!!! I am however having second thoughts about the Steeler organization this season as you can see by the letter, which I wrote to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, and to the Wheeling Intelligencer, which was published yesterday, 9/11/2010 on my 64th birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Letter
I am a lifelong resident of Moundsville, W.Va. I have always considered Pittsburgh as my city.
This is particularly true when it comes to professional athletics, but I have reached my limit.
My 64th birthday (is today) and I went to Forbes Field to watch the Pirates and Steelers when they were perennial losers - and I stick with them through thick and thin.
I am not a "Johnny come lately" when it comes to rooting for Pittsburgh teams, but if the Steelers don't get rid of Ben Roethlisberger, I will never watch or root for another Steelers team until my dying day.
I gave Ben the benefit of the doubt when the first charges were made, but these latest charges show at the very least a total lack of maturity and at worst a serial rapist on the Steelers' roster.

CONCLUSION
I am not judging Ben Roethlisberger guilty of rape. That’s a job for a jury, but my loyalty is mine to give. I know “The Chief” is rolling in his grave over this confounding situation!!!! He did everything he could to maintain a good reputation for the Steelers. I’m not sure whom to root for in the NFL this season if the Steelers don’t drop Ben Roethlisberger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am an eternal optimist and I haven’t given up hope yet, as it seems Ben’s teammates are none too thrilled with his shenanigans either. Even 13-year veteran, and Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward wouldn’t walk side-by-side with Roethlisberger into training camp, and he wasn’t voted team captain. If Dennis Dixon has a good start to the season, and Byron Leftwich comes back from injury strong the creep, Roethlisberger may be kicked to the curb by the Steelers even yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like the only way the creep will be kicked to the curb is if we, the fans, bring pressure to bear on the Steelers by taking our fan base and dollars elsewhere. Let the sponsors of the televised games and the advertisers know we will not buy their product as long as The Creep remains on the team. Money talks! Thanks for addressing this problem, Tom.
Tom, That is a bad situation in Pittsburgh. I'm glad your mountaineers are doing so well and that you got to go do something fun on your birthday.
Tom, that must have been a barn burner and I am so happy your team won. This house has long been Steeler fans.
I have a feeling that Ben just got caught, while plenty of other professional athletes manage to slip under the moral radar.
That was good for the ole Mountaineers to come back!
Keep on hubbing!
Tom -
I was recruited to play football for the Mountaineers years ago but opted to go elsewhere. Good school and good program.
All the Best,
Tim
Tom,
Good article. I personally was young in the '70's when the 2 best teams were the Steelers and the Cowboys, as my brothers BOTH liked the Steelers, I became a Cowboys fan. My brothers no lionger watch sports of any kind, but I STILL love my 'Boys...even after their humiliating loss to the Redsakins last night. We even went to a Cowboys game in Dallas on Thanksgiving of 1993 for our honeymoon. My hubby LOVES the Mountaineers, but LOATHES the Cowboys AND the Steelers. His team is the Raiders....try NOT to laugh too hard!!
I do not understand why teams continue to take back criminals. Does a criminal mind make a better player? That's nuts. Give the good guys a chance to play.
Tom, Want a sob story, you're gonna get one. Growing up across the street from Yankee Stadium in the 50's; what can I say! Living ear Wrigley Field, talk about a downer. H
I am not a sports fan and always feel a bit out of it when people talk sports, so I don't really know about the situation. However, I agree that a team should keep integrity and individual players should be expected to live up to some standards.
I echo dahoglund's sentiments. Good hub!

Hi Tom, I know nothing about your sport as it's off the radar in England or Australia. I also know nothing about the person who is accused of a serious crime. What i do know is that a true fan supports the shirts that their favourite team plays in. Players come and go and if the accused is convicted he will go too. A new player will take his place and the steelers will march on. Because the club is always bigger than the player, or individual supporter.
So give the club time to sort out a situation that wasn't of their asking and put that high horse in the stable on a tether. Cheers from a 'LIFELONG' Wolverhampton Wanderers English Soccer fan and St Kilda Australian Rules football fan.
